Seated Buddha in vîrâsana bhûmisparsha mudrâ on the heptacephalic naga from Lopburi (Thai Khmer).
The Buddha in lotus position (vîrâsana) points his right hand towards the Earth (bhûmisparsha mudrâ), taking it as a witness of the enlightenment he is about to attain. The snake protects the blessed from the rain that the God of Death (Mâra) sends to try to distract him from his meditation.
